Are "Pirate" and "Gay" Interchangeable Tags?
OK, forum "Pirate"s....
Explain away the following ten evidences that pirate culture, as a whole, is a thinly veiled cloak for gayness.
10- "16 men on a dead man's chest"....Sick. And aren't all these "sea chanties" just a more-watery 'glee-club'?
9- Tendecies toward "Ramming him amidships."
8- Making men "walk the plank."
7- Distinctively flamboyant/theatrical modes of speech/dress/mannerism.
6- Wtf is with all the beards?...REDbeard, BLACKbeard, YELLOWbeard...How about TRANSPARENT-beard, right?
5- One word- Swordfighting.
4- Floating about looking for "Booty".
3- Amputated limbs are fitted not with a latex look-alike member, but instead sport either a hard, smooth, cylindrical shaft(peg), or a hook.(Much as you'd need to catch an' hold a non-'pirate' such as myself.)
2- Your poster-boy?...LONG-JOHN Silver.
1- Your flag is the "JOLLY ROGER", made of a SKULL and TWO CROSSED BONES.
I rest my case...gay.

First of all, none of this precludes heterosexual behavior, so the best you've got going is bisexuality.
Secondly, most of this is just very phallic, not necessarily homosexual. It's true that there was the sort of flamboyant pirate character, but being queer doesn't mean you don't like the wimminfolk.
One could use the same logic to call the U.S. Military gay, as I'm sure you do, Ken.
The best you've done is shown that yes, there were probably pirates representative of all possible combinations on the GLBTQ spectrum, just like in most human populations.

nah, I've got a better explanation.
ken worley wrote:10- "16 men on a dead man's chest"....Sick. And aren't all these "sea chanties" just a more-watery 'glee-club'?
16 men only? Sounds more like an exclusive group. And sea chanties are just songs those mainstream landlubbers haven't heard of.
ken worley wrote:9- Tendecies toward "Ramming him amidships."
Using antiquated language ironically.
ken worley wrote:8- Making men "walk the plank."
They have very high standards, and will disown you if they think you've sold out.
ken worley wrote:7- Distinctively flamboyant/theatrical modes of speech/dress/mannerism.
All look like they shop at a thrift store, and pretensions of being in the arts without actually producing art.
ken worley wrote:6- Wtf is with all the beards?...REDbeard, BLACKbeard, YELLOWbeard...How about TRANSPARENT-beard, right?
Okay, the beard thing is self-evident.
ken worley wrote:5- One word- Swordfighting.
Guns are too mainstream.
ken worley wrote:4- Floating about looking for "Booty".
Using African-American slang to ironically refer to their girlfriend's asses, which are actually kind of flat.

They don't sell latex look-alike peg legs at the antique/retro stores, they sell peg legs pickers got from some old fart in fly-over country.
ken worley wrote:2- Your poster-boy?...LONG-JOHN Silver.
Wearing long-johns like they're some old-timey lumberjack.

Using symbols from old-timey apothecaries.
Pirates aren't gay, they're hipsters.

"How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, 'This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed'? Instead they say, 'No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.'" - Carl Sagan

Well said PK. Pirates have their quirks like everyone else Ken. It's just unfortunate the a Freudian analysis of them is, well unfortunate to say the least.

Gee...touchy...or maybe even sensitive?...
I hope you don't get thick as thieves, and keelhaul me with your frigate.
Or call for your cabinboy(s) to bring your musketflask & cap 'n' ball pistol.
BTW, the last time I saw anyone so obsessed with "Davy Jones' Locker", it was an acne-plagued
14YO Marcia Brady, who, as most pirates do, vowed to "not wash this(left cheek)-for a whole month."*
to self: Apparently 'Privateers' think he was the "cute" monkey, too.
* Although an mpressive mark for a female teen in america in the late '70s, pirates' gestalt approach and longevity-of-purpose combine to handily put her hygiene lapse well in the shade.
@db ...Homo.

Of course Pirates are gay?
A group of MEN only at sea for years.... Cabin Boys all the rage.
My introduction to Pirates was "Captain Pugwash" cartoons.... they're as gay as an Ocker in Darlinghurst.

I refute that Captain Pugwash was Gay...he was 'in love' with the sailor's life...
Hercules, Heracles...now he swung both ways if ever a Greek sailor/ Hero did.

Yeah...right!
Just a sailor's life... with a cute prepubescent little blonde boy as a room mate.
Hoisting his Jolly Roger and camping it up around the Caribbean.

You're just trying to deflect attention away from Errol Flynn.
