I'm putting together a team for the upcoming Race for a Curecharity go-kart race on October 22nd. Scuderia Spaghetti Volante (or "Flying Spaghetti Racing Team", loosely) needs two more drivers to help race and help fundraise.
The point of the event is to raise money for Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills. Here's the blurb from their own web site:
Our more than 37 volunteer drivers provide transportation to treatment centres and this year will exceed 160,000 Km's. In addition, we provide practical & emotional support, equipment, wigs & turbans, dietary supplements, yoga & tai chi classes, respite & palliative care and home-related services, all at no charge to the patient. More than 460 patients have been assisted so far through our programs, and sadly that number increases each year.
This is a small, and truly grassroots, organization that was created seven years ago when the Canadian Cancer Society closed their Halton Hills office (northwest of Toronto) and this group stepped up to fill the void of services. Any excess money that they raise beyond what they need gets donated to the Princess Margaret Hospital (a Toronto hospital with extensive cancer treatment and research programs) each year.
The race is in Brampton on the morning of Sunday, October 22, 2006. It's a "Le Mans"-style race: one kart, 4 drivers, and we switch every ~17 laps. The whole race is about two hours.
If you're interested, here's what I need from you:
- you must be at least 16, and must have parental permission if under 18 (track rule), and must bring a parent to the race if under 18 (my rule)
- you must have a driver's license (another track rule)
- you must be willing and able to raise at least $50 by October 1 for your share of the deposit ($200, split 4 ways), and at least another $50 by race day for a total of $100 ($400, split 4 ways), though more is better and the more we raise, the better our starting position is.
- you must be willing to show up on time for the race on October 22nd, at either 7:30 a.m. or 9:30 a.m (I'm trying for the 9:30 race, but can't promise that it won't fill up)
It would be good if you have some karting experience, but don't be shy if you don't; this is more about raising money and having fun than getting a trophy.
If you're still interested, PM me here.
Can't make the race, but want to help?
If anyone here is interested in supporting us, check the forums for fundraising announcements to come. CAShh is a registered charity in Canada and donations are tax-deductible for Canadians. If you want to donate from elsewhere, check the tax rules where you live.
Woot!
(BTW - we DEFINITELY need an FSM in a racecar emoticon)
