Haven't seen that in years so off I go!!!!

Caught Zombieland the other day, opening day in fact. (December the 3rd! Came out months ago everywhere else!) It was pretty amazing. Saw it again last night as well as Paranormal Activity. The late showing, dead of night, practically no-one in the cinema.

You'd think it would be scary, right? No. Biggest let down in a horror movie that I've ever seen. Every 'jumpy' bit was preceded by a long ominous drone thing. I also hated both the characters. The husband was a chirpy arsehole and the wife was completely typical. SPOILERS AHOY! Highlight to view:

I was unbelievably overjoyed when the husband died and the wife went superdemon. I cheered.

In other news, I also saw Where the Wild Things Are. It was beautifully artistic, the combination of puppets and CGI worked really well, the voice work was fantastic, yet I left the movie with an enormous feeling of 'meh'. The story was really lacking, as well as the history and motives of the characters. It just didn't work for me.
A flap of the wings yesterday means big changes tomorrow.
Let's work together to keep the present inevitable.

So yeah, I went and got a blog.

Started watching 'The Hills have eyes II' last night. When the guy went to the lavatory/latrine and a hand came out of the loo and grabbed his chuddies I switched off!!!!
The smoke wafted gently in the breeze across the poop deck and all seemed right in the world.

We watched Trekkies. I never quite figured out the point, but there were some very funny bits. I like that they used both the actors and the fanatics (and they were very fanatic), not focusing entirely on one or the other.

I enjoy Star Trek, but I've never been a Trekkie, Trekker, or whatever the current slang is.

As long as it doesn't involve hands reaching out of lavatories I'll watch it.

Roman Polanski's Macbeth..... It's really a horrible story if you think about it... I found it quite disturbing... Polanski certainly knows how to bring out the grotesque and ghoulish in any tale... now I'm gonna watch it again in German (as soon as Schubert's 4th symphony stops!) I might understand it better.... Shakespeare is pretty incomprehensible sometimes!
PS actually Polanski's version of Tess wasn't as ghoulish as it could have been... he only had a bit of blood soaking thru' the cieling... and he totally avoided the savage irony of Tess's execution, which T Hardy (as I recall) describes with Angel wandering off with another girl.

Sin City.

Where to start. It looks like a graphic novel, black and white with occasional splashes of color. It certainly was original, and seemed to accomplish exactly what it set out to. Including a lot of very unpleasant people doing horrible things to each other. It was kind of cool, in a way.

On the other hand, the dialogue was so over-the-top comic book cheesey that I kept saying "I can't believe they actually said that with a straight face". In other movies, every once in awhile they might try lines like that, said ironically, or tongue in cheek, but here it was every line: "Marv: So, you were scared, weren't you Goldie? Somebody wanted you dead and you knew it. Well, I'm gonna find that son of a bitch that killed you, and I'm gonna give him the hard goodbye. " Oh Puh-leeze! Most of the talking was this film-noir narration stuff.

All the guys were tough and violent, all the women were scantily-dressed hot chicks, some of whom were also violent. Blood splashed everywhere, although it was often white or fluorescent yellow. I can imagine the type of person who is the target audience for this kind of thing, and it's not me. This would be perfect for the nerdy kid who lives in his parents basement, lives out his fantasies online, and dreams of someday speaking to an actual girl but hasn't got the nerve.

If this had been made by less-skilled moviemakers, we would have turned it off in the first ten minutes. But we spent a lot of time laughing at the movie rather than with it.

It is a film based on a comic book, same as Watchmen and Batman, all good in their own way but there are inevitable cheesy bits.

I've only seen about 1/3rd of Sin City but the bit I saw was quite enjoyable.

Sin City was one hell of a film. I've been meaning to pick up a copy on dvd for some time now, but for some reason it slips my mind whenever I'm actually out shopping. I heard that Mickey Rourke had some questions about Marv, and Miller answered them by going out and getting a t-shirt with Marv on it, and that explained Marv to Rourke pretty thoroughly.
