I am now reading The Fountainhead..

Read Atlas Shrugged quite a while ago and love Fountainhead so far...

A slightly misleading title. It covers many different topics but the general thrust is towards a coming shift in human consciousness.

Maybe you meant "I am now reading The Fountainhead."
I believe it's time for mankind to set aside the crutch of religion and embrace morality born of reason and truth. Those crutches have long since proven treacherous when the ground gets slippery.

I've tried twice to read through that, everyone tells me I'll love it. It bored me to death.

Stephen King is unbelievably random in the quality of his work. He's written some of the best stuff I've read and also some of the worst garbage ever.

well you're right...the first time i read it i was not sure what to think about it but you should read it to go on with "the drawing of the 3" and "wastelands"...
5,6 and 7 aren't that good anymore either...
but still i think the story alltogether isn't that bad...

I'm still amazed that the mind which created The Shawshank Redemption feels fine lending his name to absolute garbage like Tommyknockers.

As fate would have it a friend of mine told me about The Shawshank Redemption, but didn't know its exact title or in which book to find it anymore. Research on amazon has shown that's it's to be found in "Different Seasons". Now he will have a much easier time finding it and then lending it to me. So thanks for mentioning it here! :)

Do you think S.K. will ever write a really good book again? Did you read the Dark Tower? I felt let down like I did with the Matrix Trilogy by the last two books.

I've decided he doesn't know when his books are good and when they are not. Shawshank is so far above anything else he's written it's hard to compare. In general, he's way better at short stories than he is at novels IMO. If you read up the thread a bit, I said I couldn't get through the Dark tower so far after having tried 2x.


Angus: You should have read Fountainhead first. It's a great book, but not as good as Atlas so it won't seem as good by comparison. Anthem is great if you want a short read.

I whole-heartedly disagree with that. I'm working on Paradiso now, and the attention to detail which Dante has shown simply astounds me. Oh: something important to note is that The Divine Comedy is not a map of the afterlife. Like the Bible, it's to be taken allegorically.

After devouring The Road, I purchased Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men. I read it in 1.5 days, which is the fastest I've ever read any book, as I recall. It's remarkable, especially, considering that I work full time *and* am in college full time.

I recommend both books.

Not sure what to read now. Maybe clear my palate with some Hemingway.
