pastafarian is a play on words from the "true" religion of rastafainism, kind of like the use of RAmen for Amen, and spagnostic for agnostic.

I love the way Rastafarians (and other island folk) talk. It's very... neat. I can't ever understand them but I find it almost soothing to listen to a conversation.
Our Pasta, who "Arghh" in heaven, Swallowed be thy shame. Thy Midgit come. Thy Sauce be yum, On top some grated Parmesan. Give us this day our garlic bread. And give us our cutlasses, As we swashbuckle, splice the main-brace and cuss. And lead us into temptation, But deliver us some Pizza. For thine are Meatballs, and the beer, and the strippers, for ever and ever. RAmen.

No kidding. I want to throw up.

I grew up going to a congregational church, where i spent more time in youth group than in the pews.

Before i heard of FSMism i "converted" to rastafarianism in my own way, and read about the history.
I still am a rastafarian in some ways, yet in moar ways i'm a pastafarian.

Rastafarianism is the believe that King Haile Selassi the 1st, is divine. King Haile's nickname was Tafari, which later turned into the reference rastafari. Sometimes you'll hear a rastafarian yell, JAH RASTAFARI!

King Haile Selassi I is worldly famous for his address to the League of Nations in 1936. It was mainly about peace, equality, and freedom.

Rastafarians smoke marijuana for religious and insight purposes. The rasta legend has it that the natural mystic (weed) grew out of the grave of King Solomon, which rastas reguard as the wisest of the kings of yore. And when you smoke the weed you gain the wisdom of King Solomon.

Rastafarianism teachings and stories are mainly about peace freedom and love, and contains many parallels to Pastafarianism.
