Re: JESUS CAMP - the most disturbing thing I have ever seen

I'm with you, and sounds like you're doing quite the job with your daughter! I think you hit the nail on the head... let children develop, don't force them into some kind of world-view mold. I'm still leery of the idea of ideological or philosophically based camps for kids no matter what the brandin...

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

I hear you on the graphic novels part. I used to have a fairly strongly-held hatred of 'comic books,' and would fight to the intellectual death with anyone suggesting they might have any value, far less literary. A good friend of mine called my bluff and asked me if I'd actually read any (which I re...

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

Well, if you like being entertained intelligently, I'd suggest renting Carnivale (the bastards cancelled it for being 'weird and unpopular'). Then it will be on DVD, not TV, so you won't have to defend watching it... and it's pretty much like an episodic film anyways!

Re: How do you make your sauce?

Honestly, that sounds closer to rocket fuel than what I think of as Marinara sauce, but nevertheless quite tasty. I like to make mine ultra simple: Fresh tomatoes Fresh basil, oregano, and thyme Onion, garlic, olive oil Hot Italian sausage (if desired) Skin and cook tomatoes down in a pot. Saute dic...

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

If you do, do it in another thread! I'm enjoying the comments in this one and don't want to see it relentlessly hijacked for no good purpose. Plus, I'm 99.999% certain that such a thread would be a complete waste of time and someone as intelligent as yourself couldn't be serious in suggesting it! So...

Re: How's your library?

I'm embarrassed to estimate how many books I actually have (I tried cataloguing and counting once and failed miserably)... but, I can quantify it sort of this way: I currently have two full-sized floor to ceiling 4' wide bookcases filled up, and then a 10'X10'X8' storage space that is probably 75% f...

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

Think of all the episodic novels of the 19th C. that are now canonized as 'literature' (Dickens, MacDonald, and Scott all come to mind), and it becomes more easy to wrap your mind around. I haven't seen Deadwood, but from what I've heard and read seems like that show in particular would be an excell...

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

You have very odd tastes. I watch both those shows, and enjoyed Dexter enough to read the books (Only read the 1st 2, the 3rd sucks ass) but I'd hardly call it literature. Carnivale kept me watching for some reason I don't fully understand, but all in all I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If I wer...

Re: El Orfanato kicked my ass. A lot.

I got bored with the Orphanage about 3/4 way through because a) I saw it in a crappy art-house theater and b) I thought I had it figured out. I was pleasantly surprised, however, with the ending... the film doesn't even compare Pan's Labrynth for me, but the Orphanage is about the only 'ghost' film ...

Re: Favourite Book

It's almost a cliche at this point, but I recently reread it for the umpteenth time, and it holds up well to time and experience. If I had to pick one book to say was my favorite, I'd have to say One Hundred Years of Solitude . It's the only book which I reread on a yearly basis with any consistency.

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

I think most people generally use the term literature to apply to what they like... or, there is a school that seems to insist on contrarily dismissing anything labeled literature as elitist and intellectual (not that I've ever quite figured how intellectual became a dirty word in American english)....

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

You aren't alone there! I have a literature degree sadly enough (and not that that comes even remotely close to meaning anything), and I'm generally not ashamed to say that I quite like Harry Potter ;) The Potter stories are well written, have strong cultural resonance, are quite consistent with the...

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

Who cares if the purpose is to sell lots of books? Does the author's purpose in writing have any correlation to the quality of the book? I can think of at least two famous, and undoubtedly literary , authors whose sole purpose in writing was to make lots and lots of money (relatively speaking for th...

Re: What is the strangest movie you have ever seen?

Wait, I got one! Death Race 2000 (not to be confused with the bound to be dreadfully remade Hollywood spectacular to be released soon) is gloriously strange, bad, and bizzarre. The acting is horrible, the premise is utterly fucking ridiculous, the ending is quite possibly evidence for the existence ...

Re: What is the strangest movie you have ever seen?

I was really disappointed in Southland Tales ... I expected better from our Donnie Darko creators. Oh well. Not sure how we are using the term 'strange' here, but I'll post two suggestions that might loosely fit some possible criteria... Mindwalk is definitely throught-provoking, and thought-provoki...
