Re: All Things Words

Cacography... handwriting so loud it can't be read without earplugs?

Quagmirific... A state of euphoria common only to quaqmirophiles, usually involing total body immersion in unlikely quantities of muck?

Are you sure you invented those?

Re: Anthony Bourdain for Cardinal

LBB perhaps then? What's one step lower than a Cardinal other than a Litle Brown Bird? Could be LBB Bourdain, and I wouldn't dream of suggesting the demotion of an eminent grease such as yerself.

Re: Favourite Book

Yup, love Marquez and Borges both... actually learned Spanish originally to read them in original. And I still couldn't understand 25% of what Borges said, but the other 75% made it worth it.

Re: How's your library?

Absolutely, but I don't think I can bear to part with them. I've got the Riverside and Oxford editions of the complete works. And they are well dog-eared at this point.

Re: How's your library?

OMFSM, that's bloody brilliant! I think I'll be able to build quite a large palace with my tablets. And I'll use the proceeds from the book sale to put in stained glass windows and slate roofing. You want first dibs on my collection of rare 9th C Christian Theology, including *wink wink* beautiful h...

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

Not gonna cite their literariness, since that seems a contentious label at the moment, but... I just couldn't see the point. That whole trilogy seemed like it was just restating what had been stated before by, oh, about a million and a half authors, and not very well at that. I hate to say it, but t...

Re: What are you reading right now?

Yeah, I really like some of Card's books, but I'm really uneasy with his politics. What amazes me is that he is such a nutjob in real life, and yet it doesn't translate over into his books very much. I.e., he actually does talk about homosexuality in some of the Ender books, and in a fairly respectf...

Re: Favourite Book

All of his books are incredible. They really are. Might I suggest News of a Kidnapping when you're done with love? It's nonfiction, but just fantastic... and if you like Marquez, you probably appreciate Borges as well. Wonderful stuff.

Re: How's your library?

Wow, you guys hit it on the head. THis is, incidentally, why I think all the talk about digital technology heralding the end of print is nonsense. There will always be bibliophiles out there who understand that the smell and feel of old paper is part of the experience. Plus, it's just easier on the ...

Anthony Bourdain for Cardinal

Umm, not sure this is the right place, etc., Given Anthony Bourdain's amazing contributions to the fields of Cooking, Eating, Drinking, Making Cool Things to Watch and Read, and General Badassness (you can just tell he's really a Pirate), I'd like to suggest we confer upon Tony the honorific of Card...

Re: Of why harry potter and dan brown books sucks

We could start a whole new sub-thread! Books/movies/shows we were too cool to watch, and then felt like morons for having put off for so long... My list would look (incompletely) like this-- Harry Potter Forrest Gump (hrmm, a pattern emerges) The Sandman The Watchmen, V for Vendetta (movie and book)...
